In The Light

What Would Jesus Do?

I remember when those bracelets first came out. I of course had one in every color. I remember wearing them every day and being proud that I was a Christian. But that’s all I did. I wore a bracelet or a t-shirt with a corny rip off on it to tell people that I was a Christian…In fact, I probably wore them because all my friends had them too.

I wish I could have been more serious back then about my walk with God. The way I am now. I mean… I was serious I thought… I hung out with all Christians people and friends and went to church every time the doors were open.

Don’t just wear a bracelet or a t-shirt or put a chrome fish on the back of your car because we are all part of a “club”! If you are going to announce to others that you are a Christ follower then back it up with your actions. This is not optional!

James 2:16-17

16) If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17) In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

WWJD?    HE WOULD ACT!

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and there are many serving opportunities in the city… Please see The Action page on our website for more info!

Gandhi said… “Be the change you wish to see in the world” He didn’t have to wear a shirt…

just a touch of love

as I write I am watching “sister act”. It was on tv this morning and i haven’t seen it in a while. It has inspired me to write…

In the movie Whoopi Goldberg has to hide out in a convent in order to testify against a bad guy. Anyway… she is a lounge singer who is very different from any nun I have ever seen. At one point in the movie she goes across the street in the middle of the night to the bar and some of the nuns follow her. The Reverend Mother obviously gets mad and tells her that they can’t do that because the walls of the church are what protect them.

Isn’t that what’s wrong with a lot of churches today. ( I am talking about myself too). I mean… really! Why are we hiding behind walls when God is protecting us. Go into the world people, don’t be a wuss!

As the story continues… the head lady finally lets them start singing “secular” songs that are popular in the community and the people on the streets start coming in. They are being relevant to the outsiders. Geez!

So… they became relevant to the community and what happened?

They were making a difference outside the walls and it brought people into them…

Take 5

I went to Atlanta last weekend to get the rest of my stuff out of my parent’s basement. It was a quick trip, but Blake helped me and we loaded up the uhaul and I towed the rest of my house down to Savannah.

One of the things that I brought was my hi-fi. for those of you that don’t know me that well, this was a very hard thing to be without. I am obsessed with vinyl (records). Music on cd or other newer formats just doesn’t cut it when you know better. You can listen to music in the car and hear the sound but when you sit down and listen to a record you can feel the music.

You see… a vinyl record has a groove carved into it that mirrors the original sounds waveform. The record player transforms this groove into an analog sound signal which is fed into the amplifier. In this process, NO information can be lost! So… you have the most pure sound imaginable. It might be scratchy and poppy at times but if you listen closely, you can hear things that you cannot hear on a digitized CD, you can pick out all the different instruments and imperfections if there are any. It is completely true.

I am striving to live my life this way. To let God carve his groove in me that I might mirror Him. For my heart to break for what breaks His. Yeah… my sound might be a little clouded at times and make some unneeded annoying pops and crackles but if you listen closely you can hear the groove guiding the way.

That is what I am striving for… the most pure sound imaginable!

Don’t Get Comfortable

The Action event today was great! We all pooled our spare change and had over $500 that we took to Wal-Mart and broke into groups of two. Each group had $62 to spend. We got book bags and filled them with things like notebooks (HSM ofcourse), colored pencils, crayons, glue, and a lot of other goodies that will help these kids with school. Ofcourse I think that Krista and I had the best bags. She knew where the hidden composition books were on the other side of the store!!! hehe

All in All it was a lot of fun… Great fellowship with everybody while helping out foster kids in our community.

OK… Canvasians… this is just the beginning of things to come. I have a few ideas up my sleeve and some really great things are in the works. We are not a church of comfortable people. We are going to be very visible in our community and hopefully unbelievers will notice that it’s not just about going to church on Sunday mornings. We ARE the church… let’s ACT accordingly!

Thanks to Jeremy for organizing this event and letting is Canvasians partner up with Selah! Here are a few highlights.

The Great Adventure

so… here’s the deal.

I haven’t been blogging a lot lately because I have had sensory overload in my head. That probably doesn’t make sense to anyone but me. But you chose to read my blog so you have to deal with my ramblings.

It just seems like I have been waiting for this time for so long. I moved down here so much earlier than everyone else and experienced a lot of impatience. Now, Doug & Shelly are here, we are having core group meetings and are planning the launch of this church in about 4 months. All the things that I couldn’t wait for but have gotten very anxious about. Not anxious in a bad way mind you. Anxious to the fact that God chose me. Why in all creation would he choose me to help with the church?

I am still struggling with that. Everyday I wake up and I feel as though I have nothing to bring to the table of Canvas Church and then everyday God shows me something that I didn’t see before while making it more clear that I am doing His will.

I had a conversation with my roommate Austin tonight. He is helping with the React Conference at Bible Baptist Church this weekend. We had a great study about people in the bible who reacted to God. I am not going to give away his thoughts on the subject. But one of the things that stuck out in my mind after this study was…

How as Christ follower’s can we not react?

so… as this adventure to transform a city continues I am going to stop making excuses that I am not worthy .

I am not going to wait for God to React to me, I am going to React to Him.
